Websense has released a new security database - Premium Group III: Malicious Web sites - that it says will enable IT administrators to block employee access to sites that have malicious web-borne code.

Unlike anti-virus software that is reactive, PG III is billed as a preventative measure because it stops a user's request for a malicious web site before it can enter an Internet gateway.

According to the company, it is critical to prevent access to sites with malicious mobile code (MMC), such as the recent Nimda worm, since MMC attacks a company's network when employees visit infected web sites.

The IT security firm says that, if it had been available last year, PG III could have provided Websense customers with an automatic protection against web-based variants of the Nimda worm, which cost many companies around the world considerable downtime.
