CI SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS, a small U.K.-based company specializing in business-to-business data encryption, announced Monday that it has acquired the worldwide patent to the transfer of encrypted EDI (electronic data interchange) documents for sending over the Internet. EDI is a standard for electronically transmitting information and has been in wide use for approximately 25 years.

CI lawyers are examining the company's rights, with a view to requesting license fees from several companies that market EDI software, said CI's Managing Director Jonathan Palmer, who estimated the worldwide market for EDI at some $70 billion a year.
