Hacks/Cracks last year’s ranking: New. STAGE OF GLOBAL CONQUEST: “There are only two types of companies,” F.B.I. director Robert Mueller proclaimed at a security-industry conference earlier this year, “those that have been hacked and those that will be.” The well-publicized exploits of Anonymous, which played a role in stoking the Occupy Wall Street movement and was a prominent supporter of Wiki­Leaks, may be only the beginning. Mafia groups have been aggressively attacking financial-services firms, and countries like Russia, China, Israel, and the United States all are said to have active cyber-espionage programs. UNLIKELY UPSIDE: In Silicon Valley, ethical, or “white hat,” hackers are celebrated for their pluck. In his letter to shareholders, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg distilled Facebook’s corporate culture as “The Hacker Way.” LOOMING THREAT: The feds. In March, when it was revealed that a prominent member, Hector Monsegur, or “Sabu,” had turned informant and had been working for the F.B.I. since the previous summer, the group responded by hacking the Web site of Panda Security, a top computer-security firm, seen as responsible for the arrest of 25 Anonymous members. “Hacks will continue and so will the anger of the people,” an Anonymous Twitter account proclaimed.
