The IPFire project development team has announced the first beta release of an ARM port of version 2.11 of its open source firewall. IPFire is a Linux server distribution that can be booted from a CD or USB drive, or installed to a computer's internal drive.
The port of IPFire contains all of the same features as the standard full releases, but can be run on any Marvel Kirkwood system-on-a-chip (SoC) – such as that found in the SheevaPlug – or compatible ARM-based processor. According to Project Leader Michael Tremer, the team had one Dreamplug from Globalscale donated to them for development and building the code for the ARMv5tel platform. The developers expect to release another version for ARMv7hl, which includes embedded hardware floating point support, "in the near future".
