Security All of us rely on information every day in just about every aspect of our life. As information is so important, we tend to rank it by its reliability. There are some people whose opinion we trust implicitly on certain matters. We accept as a matter of course that information is only valuable if it is accurate. The most valuable sources of information are those that are seen to be inherently reliable and easy to access.

There are some people whose opinion we trust implicitly on certain matters. We accept as a matter of course that information is only valuable if it is accurate. It seems strange then that when it comes to information in the workplace, we seem to place a far lower importance on ensuring the integrity and availability of the information on which we base our business decisions. This after all is what information security is all about. Why do we need to wait until a legal obligation is imposed upon us before we take information security seriously?


Obviously compliance with legal requirements is important. It provides a very good reason for reviewing our information security practices, but it should not in itself be the sole or even the main driver. If a business wishes to survive, let alone prosper, it must grasp the nettle of information security and put in place appropriate measures and processes.
