Arbor's technology, the result of research conducted at the University of Michigan, consists of monitors-customized hardware with an embedded operating system-that can be distributed throughout a service provider or hosting network. Placed in front of the routers, the monitors gather information about traffic patterns and flag anomalies, such as excessive traffic coming from a given IP address. The software also generates a fingerprint to trace the origins of the attack. Operators at the customer site or Arbor's network operations center can take corrective action, such as blocking excessive traffic. "Arbor's product is the first step in helping ISPs and huge enterprise networks [stop attacks]," said Jeff Ogden, associate director for high-performance networks at Merit Networks, an ISP that's testing the Arbor service.
