The chief public policy issue of the Internet Age is privacy, International Business Machines Corp. (nyse: IBM) Chairman and Chief Executive Louis Gerstner said on Tuesday. In a wide-ranging keynote speech at an industry trade show here, Gerstner said that privacy issues should be at the top of the Internet policy agenda, ahead of Web taxation, new-economy trade rules and intellectual property protections. "Paramount among all these policy issues, especially in the near term, is one -- privacy," the head of the world's largest computer company said. Gerstner said the answer to the privacy concerns raised by new technologies lies in what he described as a "responsible marketplace."
