Recently it was announced that the US government is going to loosen the bonds that restrict the exportation of cryptographic products from the US. Although this is good news, it would seem that there is a flip side to the coin.

Senior Clinton officials are now urging Congress to support a bill that offers increased defenses against criminals who would have access to the more secure communications allowed by the expanded availability of encryption products.

This alone is not necessarily a bad thing, but it seems that the original version included a section that would have allowed law enforcement officials the right to execute search warrants without having to immediately inform the person whose property they were searching.

It remains to be seen precisely how the government and law enforement officials are going to handle the increased availability of cryptographic products.
