One of the new features in Ubuntu 8.10 is the ability to create an encrypted directory for content you do not want others to access. Oh, by the way, did you know that anyone can read your files that are in your home directory?

Searchable and readable are different permissions. Another reason for an "open" home directory is for applications that need to view files there when they are not running with rootness. Apps like Apache, fingerd, and others need to access (x), but not read (r). Set your homes to 0711 (rwx--x--x) and make sure to make any file you do not want others seeing 0600. |
