plugins.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi is a very
annoying bug: a race in writing the registry can cause
the user to have a completely broken registry.  You can only
recover by manually deleting the registry.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi reduced our
.so size by a good 30%
