The term 'infosec professional' is almost a contradiction in terms, according to analyst group Gartner, which warns the field of IT security is still finding its feet. The analyst house said there is little agreement on what constitutes professionalism. This means hiring decisions are complicated by a lack of consensus on the skills needed and, as a result, many security problems will remain unsolved until specialists pool their knowledge and experience, Gartner said in a briefing note.

Criteria seem obvious

A person who can detect both real and simulated attacks, from internal and external intruders, who can implement defenses to prevent such attacks, who can reasonably confine unknown attacks and who can implement recovery procedures to rapidly recover from anything that gets through. THAT is a security specialist. I don't see that the methods used (and therefore the skills applied) are as important as the results obtained. I'm normally a theoretician, so it pains me to say this, but infosec is much more akin to rock climbing. Knowing what a rope is doesn't get you to the top, and some who climb the highest peaks don't use rope at all. This isn't an area that you can just check a box to say that you know it.
