The main purpose of our paper is to describe the various forms of wireless data transmission and to address the security concerns in each. The major form of wireless data transmission that we will be covering will be Wi-Fi. We will discuss security concerns, how to protect yourself, the future of Wi-Fi, and what it is used for in today’s world.
Wireless fidelity, or Wi-Fi for short, is defined as “A term developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to describe wireless local area network (WLAN) products that are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) 802.11 standards.� (http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/glossary.asp?TID=2#W). Wi-Fi works by using radio waves, which are produced by sending AC current to an antenna, so send alternating electric currents. The wireless adapter converts these electric currents into data. There are three main standards set forth by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ that we are going to talk about. They are 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g.
