The simple answer to that, if there is one, is that organizations are caught between massive security requirements and miniscule security budgets. Outsourcing offers the benefits of economies of scale in that the client does not need to hire staff, spend money for specialized infrastructure, etc. The long answer is far more complex and includes a bunch of issues, such as: What do you do when you get an alert? How do you handle 24/7 coverage? How do you manage large numbers of false alarms? Some studies that we have performed indicate that it costs several times as much for an organization to perform their own full-coverage monitoring as it does to outsource it.

For all of that, however, there has been some bad press lately over remote monitoring services. Brian Ploskina, writing in Interactive Week, made numerous observations disparaging the record of several remote monitoring services. The Ploskina story points out many failed examples and very few successes. Those successes pointed out were attributed to a single vendor, while some of the best-known providers were left out. Unfortunately, this is misleading and gives a bad view to the reader of a valuable service.
