Concerns about on-line credit card security and privacy of personal information are often listed as the major reasons for this lack of Internet purchasing. According to Visa Canada Association, in 1999, 67 per cent of Canadian shoppers didn't see the Internet as secure in 1999, down from 75 per cent in 1996. "We'd like to see that number drop much faster," says Visa Canada spokesperson Rick Pyves.

To alleviate concerns, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce rolled out one-use Visa credit card numbers for Internet purchases earlier this month. The one-use cards mean users do not have to disclose their regular Visa numbers on-line.
