The Senate plans to add two major computer and information security bills to a House bill scheduled to come its way as early as tonight. According to a Senate source, S. 1314 - the Computer Crime Enforcement Act, and S. 2448 - the Internet Security Act, will find their way onto H.R. 46, the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Act, once the bill reaches the Senate. S. 1314 establishes a $25 million grant program to help state and local police attack computer-related crime, and is sponsored by Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Democrat Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., as well as Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee Chairman Mike DeWine, R-Ohio.

The bill was drafted to help states through the grant program, administered by the Justice Dept., enforce their computer crime laws, in the face of mounting costs. It has been endorsed both by the Information Technology Association of America and the Fraternal Order of Police.
