Privacy advocates are jumping up and down in protest about the Internet this summer, and they're landing hard on browser cookies--small records placed on an Internet user's computer during a visit to a Web site. That Web site can read the cookie later--perhaps a minute later, perhaps a month later--to identify the user and recall personal preferences.
