Troubleshooting crashed system, stranded 35,000  07 April 2006

BART officials promised Thursday to thoroughly investigate why technicians risked working on computers that control trains while the transit system was running, work that crashed BART's main computer, stalled 50 to 60 trains, and stranded 35,000 passengers for more than an hour at the peak of the Wednesday evening commute. "The bottom line is we shouldn't have worked on it (during service hours)," BART spokesman Linton Johnson said. "We shouldn't have been working on it while trains were running."

Multiple Live CDs In One DVD  24 March 2006

Live CDs do a great job of advertising Linux distributions. In addition to general-purpose live CD distributions, there are lots of task-oriented live CDs. Wouldn't it be great if you could carry multiple live CDs on one DVD disc? Nautopia.net has put up a script that you can use to make a custom DVD to boot multiple live CDs.

New Gmail Vulnerability leads to Remote Javascript Execution  01 March 2006

A recently discovered vulnerability in Google Gmail allows automatic javascript execution when using the preview function. While Google filters javascript sent among Gmail accounts, e-mail from outside accounts such as Yahoo! are not filtered.

The Common Malware Enumeration Initiative was just announced. Headed by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) and supported by an editorial board of anti-virus vendors and related organizations it should provide a neutral, shared identification method for malware outbreaks.
